WestLake performance in Hangzhou

I went to a performance at the WestLake in Hangzhou and it was really wonderful. There were 10 songs and there were a bunch of performers and singers on the water as well as a lightshow. The show moves between each song pretty quickly and all the performers were really good. It felt as if I was watching a halftime show for the Superbowl or something. This show was originally created for the 2016 G20 Hangzhou summit, but it was so well received that they continued to have the show for the general public. If you go, you may need to dress for the weather – it was pretty chilly when I watched it.

Scenery at the end of the performance as people started to leave

One thing that surprised me was a machine they used to add different scents during the performance. To me, it seemed like some of the scents were random, but some of them seemed to align with the music and dancing. This machine is built by Scentrealm and it is the first time I’ve used something like this before. It’ll be cool to see if adding special scents to performances will catch on in other places as well.

What is good about having a pet?

What is good about having a pet?

There are tons of reasons why having a pet is good. For example, pets can be good companions. When I was growing up, my dog was one of my best friends. We spent a lot of time hanging out together. Pets can help build a routine and responsibility. I was one of the main caretakers of my dog, so I had to take him out regularly and clean up after him.

How do I manage screen time for myself?

How do you manage screen time for yourself?

I started using a screen time app timer, which is built into the mobile phone that I use. I only use the app timer for social media applications. I used to have a pretty strict timer, like 10 minutes, but I’ve increased the timer to 1.5 hours for some of the apps. So, you could probably say that the screen time management is not working that well 😅

What am I most proud of in my life? Attempt 2

What are you most proud of in your life?

One of my friends mentioned that my previous answer was not satisfactory. So, I’ll try again.

I’m proud of a few things in my life. Some include:

  • Good relationship with my family
  • Good education
  • Relatively healthy
  • Supportive and loving partner
  • Able to get along with most people – no nemeses that I know of
  • Willing to consider other perspectives
  • My sense of humor
  • Somewhat willing to improve myself
  • Relatively stable

Out of these things I’m proud of, the thing I’m most proud of is the fact that pets are generally nice to me, haha.

But the second thing I’m most proud of is the fact that I have a relatively good relationship with family and friends. My interactions with them have shaped who I’ve become – without them, life would be much tougher to navigate.

My cooking failure experience

Write about your most epic baking or cooking fail.

When I was younger, I was convinced the more you seasoned something, the more tasty the food became. These were the days where I put a bunch of soy sauce on food during dinner. Anyways, there was one time where I cooked steaks for my godmother’s birthday for her, my mother, and I and I was pretty excited. These were also the days when I watched a ton of Food Network. If I recall correctly, I marinated the steak with soy sauce and also seasoned it with steak seasoning. After I cooked it on the stove top and ate it for dinner, I realized that it was way too salty. My mother and godmother were pretty nice about it, but that experience plus a time where I basically drowned my rice in soy sauce led me to the realization that seasoning, like most other things, is better in moderation.

Why do I blog?

Why do you blog?

I started writing a private journal in 2016 during an internship in NYC. I didn’t know many people in the city and I had a lot of free time. This was my first time living in a large city and I enjoyed the lifestyle and the energy. I continued to journal after the internship for a few years, but at a certain point, it became more of a chore and a daily progress update of what I did that day. It certainly is nice to have a written log of what I’ve done so I can reference it, but I decided to blog as an alternative. I would say that this blog is a mix between a journal and a blog. I talk about what happens during my day and I also talk about random stuff that I think about as well. One nice thing about the blog that is different than the journal is that I can share it with friends, family, and the world. The blog is one way people can keep up with what I’m doing and it’s nice to write in general.

Month long exercise challenge review

In August, I participated in an exercise challenge with my coworkers and some of their friends. Basically, each challenge is meant to be done for the whole month and every few days a new challenge is added on top of the existing challenges. The challenges included activities such as doing push-ups, running, reading, journaling, intermittent fasting, skin care routine, saying what you are grateful for, and more. There were also options of swapping out previous challenge activities for new ones if the previous activities didn’t make sense in your lifestyle. The activities could be done on your own and there was a discord channel with the other members where people could post progress and talk about how they are doing.

I participated for the first few activities but ended up tampering off. I chose to do push-ups and crunches, journaling, eating whole foods, writing what I’m grateful for, cold showering, and maintaining a skincare routine. I did the push-ups, crunches, and journaling pretty much every day at the beginning. However, once the eating challenge came through, I basically gave up. I already eat relatively healthy, but so many foods are not considered “whole” foods, so I just was like “forget it, I’m not doing this”. I tried picking up some of the other challenges while maintaining the exercise and journaling, but I wasn’t as consistent as before.

In general, I thought that these activities were good and it was a constructive thing to have other people doing the challenges with me to help push us to continue. I don’t think I’m much healthier than before, but it is clear that I can make new habits if I have a small push and the dedication to keep going. I would certainly encourage others to try to make new habits to lead a healthier life, but make sure that these habits are something you are actually open to doing.

Claim app review

I started using a rewards app called Claim, and it has been a mixed bag. Like at the beginning, there were a bunch of places that were available for getting money back, such as Chipotle, Tatte, Blank Street Coffee, and more. But now it is not so great.

The way it works is that each week you get a “drop” in which you have a choice of 3 options. After you pick one of the options, you get money back if you visit the business and make a purchase surpassing the minimum purchase mentioned in the “drop”. The “drop” also outlines how much money you can get back. You also have the option to trade your “drop” with other app users.

I was able to redeem 2 offers so far for a total of $17 dollars. However, now I only get offers for things I’m not going to redeem, either because the minimum purchase is too expensive or because the store is too far away. I’ve only used the app for a few weeks now, so I have hope that it can improve. But the good redemption opportunities seem to have dried up.
